FAQs

Is a spray tan safe?

Yes! Sunless or self-tanning products that contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient have been used in cosmetic preparations for almost 30 years. It is declared safe and suitable for use in cosmetics and drugs used to color the skin. DHA is derived from glycerin (vegetable origin), which is a commonly used cosmetic and food ingredient. A spray tan gives you a perfect even tan, with the harmful effects of excess UV exposure.

What is DHA?

Sunless tanning products contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. DHA is often derived from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane, by the fermentation of glycerin. It interacts with the amino acids in dead skin cells to produce a brown color change. DHA is not absorbed through the skin into the body and is non-toxic. DHA has been used as a diet supplement in sports nutrition and is non-carcinogenic. Testing has further shown that DHA is less toxic than aspirin, caffeine and even common table salt.

What does the tan look like?

Our spray on tan looks just like the real thing and fades naturally over time. Gone are the days of orange looking skin! The bronzer will wash off in the first bath or shower. The final tan can take up to 12 hours to fully develop to a golden brown color.

Does it wash off?

As the actual tanning product is clear in its natural form, a bronzer (Eco Tan uses Cacao) is added as a color guide and to aid uniform application. The bronzer will wash of during your shower, but you will be left with a fabulous tan. The tan will continue to darken over a 24 hour period. It gradually fades (just like a real tan) as the dead skin cells are shed.

Does it stain your clothes?

Until you have a shower, you may find that the bronzer transfers to clothing. Light colored fabrics may stain and you should avoid wearing nylon, silk, satin, lace or wool fabrics after treatment.  We recommend you wear dark loose fitting clothing during this period until you have your shower (2-6 hours, depending on your skin type and colour depth preference).

How long will the tan last?

Typically a spray tan will last for between 7-14 days. In a similar manner to a sun tan, it fades gradually as your body sheds the dead skin cells. Moisturizing regularly will help to prolong the life of your tan. Swimming in pools, spas or the ocean will make your tan fade faster.

To prolong the life of your tan we recommend that you follow the guidelines on skin preparation and post-tan care.

What should I wear during the spray tan application?

Feel free to wear whatever you are comfortable with including fully nude.  Disposable g-strings and hair nets are available for you to use.  Please don't be shy - we have seen it all before and believe that every body is beautiful!

How long should I wait after a tanning session before showering?

We recommended waiting between  2-6 hours after the application before having a shower, depending on your skin type and how dark you would like to be. For your first time using Eco Tan we suggest you wait 3 hours for a natural looking tan.

Will swimming affect my Spray Tan?

Swimming in chlorinated water or salt water can fade the results, cause possible streaking and will diminish the length of your tan.

Long exposure to water, with or without chlorine, will fade your sunless tan. Your outer skin cells will start to soak up water, and that dilutes the effect of the sunless tan. The longer you are in the water, the worse it will be. Using sunless tanners regularly over a period of time will saturate the skin better and the sunless tan will hold up longer in water, but it will still be affected. Some people report that applying a waterproof sunscreen before they get in the water prevents their sunless tan from fading as quickly.

What is the advantage of spray tanning over UV tanning?

Spray tanning is an alternative form of tanning without exposure to harmful UV rays. People with sensitive skin or people who have a hard time obtaining optimal results tanning, be it natural or in tanning beds will find this form of tanning very comforting. One application with spray tanning will be equivalent to approximately 6 tanning bed sessions, thus making it cost effective. Spray tanning also spares the skin of excessive wear and tear and free from potential burns caused by the sun or tanning beds.

Can I have a spray tan during my pregnancy?

The concern some doctors have is over whether or not the active ingredient (DHA) is able to enter the blood stream; the indications are that it cannot. DHA only penetrates the outtermost of the skin. However, if the client is still concerned they should consult their physician first. We offer face masks as an extra precaution to minimise any inhaltion.

Does a spray tan provide SPF protection?

No! Spray Tans do not provide any sunscreen protection, so you should apply sunscreen accordingly. Your skin will appear tanned, even though it's not. This is an artificial tan. There is no Sun Protection Factor (SPF) so your skin is still exposed and vulnerable to the sun.

How long does it take to apply?

A full body spray tan takes just 5-10 minutes to apply and is dry within 10 minutes.

I want to look tanned for a special occasion, when should I be sprayed?

Ideally, your tan should be applied a day or two before the event. You will look incredible!

Do I need to prepare for my tan?

In order to get the most out of your spray tan, exfoliate and shave the day before your tan. We recommend using the Tan-Away Glove (available in our online store) for proper exfoliation. Before you arrive for your tan, make sure your skin is free of perfumes, lotions, oils, deodorants, gels or any product on the skin that would create a barrier. Feel free to use our bathroom/shower to clean up before your tan if you are coming straight from work.

Should I shave before or after the spray tan application?

Shaving is a form of exfoliation so you should shave about 8 hours prior to the application. Shaving after will take off some of your tan.

Can I do anything to make my tan last longer?

Regular moisturing can help your tan last longer, however you will notice with Eco Tan that you don't need to moiturise as much - our clients all comment that Eco Tan doesn't make their skin dry like other brands.

Do you have to be over 18 to be sprayed?

Because the products are safe for all skin types and does not absorb into the skin, we are able to apply our spray tans to all age groups.

However, anyone 17 years old and younger, we require an adult be present and written parental/guardian permission.

In the case of a tanning party with minors, we will need parental permission from every minor.

Can I suntan afterwards?

Yes. A natural tan will still develop under the spray tan. Be sure to use sun screen, as the tanning solution offers no UV protection.

How often can I get a spray tan?

As often as you like - the formula is completely safe and DHA is approved for cosmetic use. Many people like to top up their tan once a week and it is completely safe to do so.

Where can I be sprayed during a mobile tan at my home?

We use a portable spraying booth, you need floor space of approximately 7 feet high and 3 feet wide for the booth plus room for your technician to stand in to spray. We usually recommed garages as they are roomy and private!

Will it make a mess in my home?

No. The portable tanning booth will ensure that your home is completely unaffected by our visit.
